The Importance of Creating Your Brand

The downturn in the economy, job-loss, minimized budgets makes the job search that much more difficult.  Whether you have recently graduated or you’ve been in the trenches there are some key solutions that are available today that may assist with your job search.  Prior to getting to the list, you have to look at yourself as the “BRAND”, the brand that you need to promote to close a deal (obviously, a job.)

  1. First, Google your name in brackets (“name”) and see what comes up since this is what potential recruiters will look at.  Anything need to be removed?  Just remember, with databases and systems it may be difficult to remove negative information from Websites.  Check the privacy link and see who owns the site and contact them to remove the data.
  2. Create a well-written resume, cover letter and have a basic thank you note ready.  Note, that these documents needs to be edited to match the job requirements that you are interested in applying to.  If you need help, contact me.
  3. Create your profile on Linkedin (lnkedin.com) and look at adding people to your community from prior companies, schools, associations, etc.  Please make sure you complete your profile, even include those current books you are reading.
  4. Within Linkedin join those groups that interest you.  Ask questions and answer questions; this helps with building your name within these groups.
  5. Obtain recommendations – don’t be shy, just ask!
  6. Writing about your skill-set helps; create a blog and make sure you share it with multiple blogspheres.  Write responses to other bloggers that topics are in your field.
  7. Create a profile in eHire.com – this is the newest solution to find a job and a place that provides career growth.
  8. About to go for that first interview: please do the following:

  • Read the letter to shareholders from the prospective CEO
  • Check out Hoovers.com
  • Read FirstResearch.com to learn about current trends in the industry.  The last section generally has some great industry specific questions to ask the person that is interviewing you.
  • Read the latest press releases.
  • Always remember the thank you once you get back to your office or home.
